As newspapers struggle to cope with the age of blogs and Craigslist, proposals are going around to treat them as charities. Tax Vox has a great piece on why this is a terrible idea, but this may be the best point:
The authors would make "news reporting" an exempt purpose under the Internal Revenue Code. Do we really want the IRS defining “news reporting?” This gives me serious chills.
Indeed.

The IRS does not require non profits to actually spend a certain amount on their mission, as opposed to fundraising. The IRS rarely interferes as long as something is spent on other than administrative and fundraising expenses. I understand the theoretical concern but it seems highly theoretical.
However, NPR is a non profit news source, it seems the framework alread exists.

I agree with the opinion piece on the Tax Vox site. I think that the vast majority of the new outlets are slowly spiraling into downward. The lack of revenue generation is a biggie, who wants to spend $25 for a 7 day classified ad for something that costs less than $500 and amounts in the hundreds of dollars for a 3-4 employment ad, when you can post more detail for much less price on alternative sources (such as Craigslist).
As well as the largest reason they give for support of such matters in the proposal is an accurate, non-bias reporting system. Unfortunately, again the newspapers are shooting themselves in the foot. I'm not sure about other papers, but the local Des Moines Register continues to have a left wing slant (both the views in the individual stories and the editorials). Combined with articles that have numerous errors (that could have been checked with a quick google search or phone call).
