so is it really worth buying a car now ? i always assume these type of tax breaks are a scam and they will just hit you with it next year.

No, the smart thing to do is wait to see if Braley's insane proposal -- to pay you to shred your old car if you buy one that burns less gas -- will be enacted. The House is already on board.
