Despite last weeks Treasury submission of "A Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing the Tax Gap," Max Baucus is unappeased. Senator Baucus, the minority leader of the Senate Finance Committee, is holding hostage the nomination of Eric Solomon to be head of the Treasury tax policy office until he is paid tribute in the form of "specific goals, standards and timetables for successful implemntation."
Never mind that a tax policy chief might be useful in developing ways to close the tax gap. Senate rules give great deference to outsized egos, and Eric Solomon, and tax policy in general, can just wait until King Max has been suitably stroked.
