SHOULD EVERYONE PAY?

May 02, 2003

Go here for a useful discussion of the idea of exempting everyone with income under $50,000 from income tax. The discussion arose because someone noticed that the purchasing power $3,000 standard deduction of 1948 would be worth about $50,000 today. Read the comments, too.

Those in favor of the notion say that it would be a popular way to help the bottom level of earners. Opponents think it dangerous to create a large class of voters who could support increased government spending without having to pay for any of it.
