Anyone wondering what the Bush Administration has in mind for tax policy should read the speech given earlier this month by Pamela Olson, Assistant Treasury Secretary for Tax Policy. We plan a longer piece about it, but the ugly reality of tax season has priority right now.
This excerpt gives you a flavor of her talk:
The basics I want to talk about are the basic problems undermining our tax system. Although there are a number of basic problems, I’m going to focus on three: complexity, the inconsistency of our rules with the values of American society, and the inconsistency of our rules with our economic interests as a nation.
Other than that, Ms. Olson, the system is in pretty good shape, right?
